FFAME Health Talk is a 5-8 minute interactive health show that entertains, educates and inspires students to make health promoting choices. It is to be viewed twice a week. At the conclusion of each show there are a variety of knowledge questions and higher level discussion questions left on the TV screen for the teacher to conveniently review with his/her class.
Students begin watching Health Talk in Second Grade. They watch the first series of 60 health talks in second and fourth grade. They watch the second series of 60 health talks in grades three and five. Health talk is shown twice a week for 30 out of the 36 weeks. The weeks your school does not air Health Talk is left up to your coordinator, but here are a few suggestions. Skip the first two weeks of school as everyone is getting settled in. Skip weeks during testing, thanksgiving, last week of school, and other holiday weeks when days are missed.
Each bi-weekly episode will cover one topic. The first episode introduces the topic and goes over basic concepts. The second episode briefly reviews and then goes more in depth to illustrate important information. Henceforth, each year Health Talk will cover 30 different topics. Certain topics are so critical that they will be covered every year. The BIG THREE topics are nutrition, exercise, and drug avoidance. These three topics are emphasized almost weekly as they are tied to the various topics. For example, during the episode about the circulatory system all three subjects; eating healthy stuff, moving around enough, and living tobacco free are stressed as key factors to maintaining a healthy circulatory system. This way these important seeds of wellness are planted and nourished consistently each week ultimately translating into positive health behavioral choices.
In order to reinforce this wellness knowledge there will be a variety of integrated lessons (math, science, social studies, and writing) for each Health Talk topic. These activities will be easily accessible at the FFAME website with your school or district login. All health talks are aligned with National and State Health Standards.
